关大铭带人在尤家大院四处寻找，最后在水井里发现了二姨太的尸体。经初步鉴定，系坠井溺水而死，没有外伤及撕打痕迹，因此怀疑为畏罪自杀。随即搜查二姨太的寝房和佛堂，发现了藏在暗处的毒死尤贤白的那只酒壶，更加证实了她的嫌疑。关大铭认为可以结案，罗兴泉不以为然，但却不肯表明，怕得罪上司。关大铭诚恳地征求他的意见，让他认识到共产党员的坦荡胸怀，讲出了自己的疑惑。其实二姨太是因为发现了暗藏的尤绍雄，胁迫他帮自己干掉曾管家和四姨太，尤绍雄又急又怕，索性灭口的。尤绍雄知道不能再躲了，必须立刻逃走。三姨太外出去找姘头胡云，把要带走的财物寄放在他那里，并要他帮忙找车。此情被曾管家发现了，他很犹豫。他很清楚尤贤白对唯一的儿子尤绍雄错综复杂的情感，出于对尤贤白的感恩之心，他决定装聋作哑让尤绍雄和三姨太逃走。关大铭认识到搞刑侦工作不能像战场上抓俘虏那样直接简单，尤其是跟女人打交道。他主动提出要和尤家几个人打场麻将，并要罗三拐教他，罗三拐大为意外。麻将桌上，三姨太有意抛媚眼勾搭，把关大铭弄得浑身起鸡皮疙瘩，但一场牌局下来，他和罗三拐一唱一和确实套出了三姨太和曾管家的一些隐情。四姨太赌气没参加牌局，玉香婶劝她不要任性，你不在场，别人就正好谗言陷害你。四姨太感到她的话有道理，就主动去找关大铭。
