关大铭三人赶到邛州调查，事隔多年，周月桂也早已销声匿迹，他们一无所获。罗兴泉遇到一个算命先生，得知到天台山的寺庙里可以打听到周月桂的消息，三人半信半疑地前往。到了庙里，果然有一位当年长庆班的琴师颜师傅。原来二十多年前周月桂与富家公子尤贤白相爱，山盟海誓私订终身，谁知尤家坚决不答应娶个戏子进门，两人就此劳燕分飞。周月桂受不了满城的耻笑和鄙视，羞愤难当上吊自缢，虽然被救了下来，人却已经半疯半颠毁掉了。周月桂的父母死得早，她哥哥周月明是戏班的武生，性子暴烈，仗着一身功夫愤怒之下冲到临江去找尤家评理拼命，结果被尤家买通袍哥老大，半路上遭暗算了。可怜周月明的尸体运回来时，他媳妇刚临产，急火攻心大出血也死了。周月桂在邛州呆不下去了，带着刚满月的小侄女儿悄悄离开，从此再无音讯。关大铭猜测，四姨太会不会就是周月明的女儿，也就是她嫁给了杀父仇人尤贤白？罗三拐的猜测更大胆，周月桂会不会就是玉香婶，多年的苦难已经改变了她的外貌？晚上，贾小蝈吃了山上采摘的蘑菇食物中毒，关大铭焦急万分，巧遇一位江湖郎中为他解毒，并讲解食物相生相克的道理。他说天台山上有一种凝心草，本身无味无毒，但与酒相克，如果把草汁混入酒里，就会致人死命，而且不留任何痕迹。关大铭心一动，玉香婶如果就是邛州的周月桂，那她完全可能知道凝心草，而尤贤白中的什么毒至今不能查明，会不会就是混进酒壶里的凝心草汁呢？关大铭决定投石问路，要求袁润邀请长庆戏班到临江市演出。与此同时，罗三拐寻找到了四姨太的娘家舅舅，证实了四姨太是养女，是早年兵荒马乱时收养的一个孤儿。演出海报贴满临江的大街小巷，关大铭还给曾管家和玉香婶送去了戏票。演出当晚，紧锣密鼓，玉香婶出现在了观众席中，显得极为兴奋。关大铭和罗三拐在暗处观察着。当演到当年周月桂最拿手的《玉簪记》时，玉香婶看着台上的角色，不能自己，嘴里情不自禁地低声哼起来，眼神与相片上的那个女川戏演员别无二致。更有意思的发现是，玉香婶和曾管家情不自禁时手紧紧攥在了一起，将二人的情感流露无遗。
