罗三拐是个老警察油子，破案很有经验，本性也很善良，但在旧社会沾染了很多旧警察习气；而贾小蝈是个“假老练”，刚当了三天黑狗子就解放了，质朴单纯，急于表现立功却常常弄巧成拙。关大铭只好一边办案一边教育改造他们。 尤贤白的儿子尤绍雄是个国民党军官，被打散后潜逃回尤家大院，在风骚的三姨太掩护下藏在后院密室里。二人当年私通与尤贤白翻了脸，现在尤贤白死了，尤绍雄要三姨太赶快说服二姨太把家产分了拿钱逃走。姨太表面拜佛吃斋却很有心计，趁尤贤白的死想当家作主，四姨太则是个年轻的新女性，早就想离婚出走。为了遗产的事，几个姨太太闹得不可开交，当关大铭等人前来调查时，被她们的钩心斗角互相诬陷搞得一头雾水。看来，尤宅的姨太太们包括曾管家都有谋害尤贤白的动机和嫌疑。关大铭首先把侦查重点放在一直与尤贤白闹离婚的四姨太身上，怀疑她有外遇勾结，而四姨太的态度非常倨傲，拒不合作。罗三拐在大院里四处观察，差点发现尤绍雄藏身的密室。关大铭到圣路易医院询问尸检结果，确认尤贤白系中毒身亡，但什么毒物却查不出，而且送检的酒里无毒，判断是在酒壶里下的毒，而酒壶在案发后不翼而飞。罗三拐和贾小蝈奉命调查几个姨太太的底细，他把曾管家悄悄约到茶铺喝茶，用枪比着连哄带诈，要曾管家交代怎么害死的尤贤白，因为尤贤白一死，曾管家是最大的受益者。曾管家无奈地交出一封国民党特务的威胁信，信里还夹着一颗子弹，他认为是特务报复尤贤白投靠共产党干的。圆滑的罗三拐觉得不能抢关大铭的功，要曾管家自己交给关。关大铭看见罗三拐和贾小蝈穿着军服在茶铺里喝茶聊天，气得吹胡子瞪眼，把他们叫回局里一顿臭骂，要他们反省检查。
