散戏后，正好邛州公安局送来了颜师傅，他答应关大铭第二天到尤家大院去认人。他们寒暄时的情景被走出剧院的玉香婶无意中看见了。夜里，玉香婶心神不定，预感到公安请来颜师傅的目的。第二天早上，当关大铭来旅社请颜师傅时，老琴师却失踪了。据伙计讲，昨天深夜有个长衫礼帽的“老朋友”请他出去喝酒，就再没回来。关大铭立刻意识到是曾管家杀人灭口，连忙派人四处寻找。罗三拐来到江边，他判断这里离旅社近，夜里又无人往来，是最佳的作案地方。停宿在江边的打鱼人蔡老七也说昨夜有三个人在远处江坡上说了很久话，但他没看清。罗三拐断定那三人就是曾管家、颜师傅和玉香婶，他软硬兼施要蔡老七作伪证。关大铭感到情况紧急，断然传讯曾管家。然而，曾管家显然有备而来，回答滴水不漏，关大铭苦无证据，传讯陷入僵局。恰好这时罗三拐带来了假证人蔡老七，歪打正着，曾管家惊惶之下漏了嘴，被罗三拐抓住了尾巴。原来昨夜曾管家把老琴师带到了江边来见玉香婶，恳求他不要指认她。玉香婶果真是周月桂，她对颜师傅讲了这二十多年的遭遇，离开邛州后，她隐姓埋名四处漂泊，靠帮工度日，受尽了东家的欺凌纠缠和地痞流氓的骚扰，相依为命的侄女儿也因为兵荒马乱失散了，后来她遇到了一个善良的小商人，就嫁给他去了山东老家，好容易过了几年安宁的生活，日本鬼子撤退时烧杀抢掠，她丈夫被打死了，家也被烧得一干二净，只好又回到老家，想到临江投靠一个远房亲戚，谁知那家人早已不知去向。
