二姨太急于当家，三姨太急于分家产，四姨太则急于搬走，曾管家拿出一份尤贤白的委托书，上边写明自己如有不测，尤氏产业皆由曾管家全权经管，任何人不得阻碍。众人目瞪口呆。曾管家表明态度，自己绝不贪尤家一分钱，但尤家有很多见不得人的事情经不起公安查，大家不能再内讧添乱，争取以老爷暴病身亡结案后就分家。关大铭单独又到尤家调查，直接去了厨房。他对厨娘玉香婶很有好感，认为她是苦出身，是自己的阶级姐妹、依靠对象。但是玉香婶对案子毫不知情，只提供出案发前几个姨太太都来过厨房，也就是说都有在酒壶里下毒的可能。这时曾管家赶来，交给了关大铭那封特务的威胁信。恰好此时公安局查获了潜伏在本市的特务网络，袁润下令抓捕，关大铭很兴奋，抓住特务尤贤白的案子就迎刃而解了。罗兴泉和贾小蝈也参加了行动，两人从未真枪实弹地打过仗，结果一个吓得屁滚尿流，一个在慌乱中先开枪扰乱了行动计划。关大铭大发脾气关了他们禁闭。罗妻听说罗三拐被关起来了，以为大祸临头，吓得带着四个娃儿来求情。袁润亲切地接待他们，还让炊事班准备饭菜，又叫关大铭送他们回去。关大铭发现罗家很贫寒，娃儿一大堆，他给了罗妻两个大洋，帮助她度难关。晚上袁润和关大铭谈心，他说共产党得天下是因为能够团结带领最广大的人民群众，包括曾经反对过我们的人，大多数旧警职人员也是普通群众，虽然他们身上有许多毛病和旧习气，这正需要我们教育帮助，而不能简单粗暴地否定他们。关大铭心悦诚服，表示自己不该把个人情绪带进工作里。罗兴泉回家后得知情况很感动，袁润告诫他，旧社会为了养家糊口当警察可以理解，但新社会做人民公安就必须具备高度的社会责任感。罗兴泉表示一定努力改造成为新人。尤绍雄害怕短期内不能分家，再躲下去会被公安查到，于是和三姨太商量装鬼到尤贤白寝房偷财物，结果吓坏了丫环春儿。
