尤家大院突然闹“鬼”，引起关大铭的警觉，感到尤家还会出事。玉香婶特别关心四姨太，要她小心提防。在罗三拐的建议下，关大铭跟他来到茶铺，了解尤家几个姨太太的情况。他才明白，在临江茶铺是信息汇集的地方，能够打听到许多的事情。比如打听到了三姨太在剧团有个相好的戏子，四姨太经常到妇女会去等等。进一步调查，原来四姨太要求参加妇女会的工作，要做时代的新女性，表现得很积极。但她这种行动令关大铭非常怀疑。而三姨太的姘头叫胡云，并无作案的嫌疑。侦破工作没有进展，罗兴泉认为外围调查作用不大，建议驻进尤家大院。关大铭却不以为然，认为他是旧警察作风，想借办案揩油。袁润却同意了罗兴泉的建议，并要他们便衣进驻。罗兴泉带着关大铭去买西服，关大铭穿着浑身不自在，而罗兴泉悄悄从店主手里吃了回扣。公安小组进入尤家大院，引起所有当事人的极大恐慌。四姨太赌气要离开大院，被关大铭严厉阻止，二姨太和三姨太暗自窃喜，火上浇油。罗三拐和贾小蝈按旧警察办案的惯例派饭，关大铭批评他们蹭吃蹭喝，指挥他们唱《三大纪律八项注意》。二姨太送一只金戒指给罗兴泉，要外出去普慈寺烧香，罗兴泉答应了。但他马上把金戒指交给了关大铭，表示自己受到了教育，很有阶级觉悟。关大铭派贾小蝈跟踪二姨太去了普慈寺。四姨太找妇女会主任于大姐告关大铭的状，于大姐问清事由后，告诉她关大铭的光荣历史，是个著名的战斗英雄，并劝告她主动配合关大铭的工作。一心要求进步的四姨太消除了对关大铭的误会。
