学习班进入了新高潮，揭批斗争坚持反动立场的旧警察头目，仿照解放军的新式整军运动，普通旧警职人员纷纷上台控诉旧社会的黑暗和自己的遭遇。罗三拐深受教育热血沸腾，也上台控诉了旧社会如何把人变成鬼的，他痛苦地反省了自己身上的旧警察恶习，发誓痛改前非。这场“两忆三查”活动大大提高了旧警职人员的思想觉悟，罗三拐请了假专程去江口镇还钱道歉，并主动到派出所沉痛检讨。关大铭知道后，感到他和贾小蝈的本质还不坏，还能够改造进步，遂招回了二人。许暴牙等人杳无踪影。罗三拐和贾小蝈前往严世维的老家调查。严的瞎眼老爹一问三不知，但表情有异。二人立功心切，晚上装成土匪入室抢劫，把瞎子严父捆绑起来用刀威胁，搜出了一根金条。严父交代出儿子前几天深夜回来过，说要出远门，不知道什么时候才能回来，所以给他留下这根金条。严世维不是一个人回来的，他身边还有个女人。关大铭得到报告，非常兴奋，把金条给郑福元验看，确认是被抢劫的金条之一，证实了严世维就是抢劫的内线。关大铭随即要罗三拐设法寻找与严世维同行的那个女人。这女人无影可查，罗三拐凭借经验，“误打误撞”地弄清楚了她曾对严世维说过的一句话是客家语，也就是说她很可能是客家人。经过仔细排查，共查到二十几个符合特征条件的客家女人，户籍资料送到了专案组。众人加班审查，当看到一个叫谭巧芸的女人照片时，关大铭大吃一惊，原来在白水县追捕许暴牙团伙时，被劫匪挟持的人质就是这个女人。
