Das herrliche Sommerwetter verlockt die erfolgreiche Yachthändlerin Vera Heitkamp zu einem Segelausflug auf die Ostsee. Hier hofft sie, das angespannte Verhältnis zu ihrem Sohn Sven auflockern zu können. Aus diesem Grund hat sie Tobias Witt, ihren Neffen, mit aufs Boot geholt. Tobias hat im Gegensatz zu seiner Tante ein gutes Verhältnis zu Sven und führt seit einiger Zeit eine eigene Segelschule. Vera Heitkamp verfolgt den Plan, Sven endlich zur Zusammenarbeit in ihrem Geschäft zu überreden. Doch der sensible und idealistische junge Mann lehnt das knallharte Geschäftsleben ab. Der Segelausflug droht zu einem Desaster zu werden. Nicht nur, dass Sven ständig schlecht ist, er stellt sich sogar so ungeschickt an, dass ihm der Baum gegen den Kopf knallt. Vera ist enttäuscht und verärgert. Unter Deck bespricht sie sich mit Tobias. Plötzlich nehmen beide ein Poltern wahr. Als sie nach oben stürzen, ist Sven verschwunden, und sie können gerade noch ein Schlauchboot erkennen, das sich mit hoher Geschwindigkeit von der Yacht entfernt. Die Küstenwache nimmt sofort die Fahndung auf, doch das kleine, wendige Schlauchboot ist nicht zu orten. Eine Lösegeldforderung über 300 000 Euro geht ein, führt aber zunächst zu keiner heißen Spur. Zugleich wundern sich Kapitän Ehlers und Bootsfrau Pia Cornelius über die gefasste und kühle Reaktion Vera Heitkamps. Während alles daran gesetzt wird, den Entführer und das Versteck des Opfers ausfindig zu machen, geht sie weiterhin ihren Geschäften nach. Zugleich wird das Umfeld Heitkamps überprüft. Könnte es sich bei der Entführung auch um einen Racheakt von Heitkamps größtem Konkurrenten Detlef Körner handeln? Cornelius tauscht sich mit Tobias aus, der im Gegensatz zu Vera Nerven zeigt und alles daran setzen will, seinem Cousin zu helfen. Als der Entführer die Lösegeldforderung noch einmal nach oben setzt, droht die Situation zu eskalieren. Tobias ist außer sich, denn Vera Heitkamp scheint nicht bereit zu sein, das Geld zu zahlen.
