or zehn Jahren kam Ehlers’ Sohn Erik bei einem Schiffsunglück ums Leben. Eriks Sohn Timo ist inzwischen zwölf Jahre alt. Er lebt mit seiner Mutter Nina und seinem Stiefvater Roman Wenkler in München. Daher sehen er und Ehlers sich nur selten. Doch jetzt kommt Timo in Begleitung seines Stiefvaters Roman Wenkler nach Neustadt, um seinen Opa, Kapitän Ehlers, zum ersten Mal allein zu besuchen. Die Gelegenheit war günstig, da Roman als Musiker beruflich in Neustadt zu tun hat. Ehlers hat sich für seinen Enkel selbstverständlich frei genommen. Zur gleichen Zeit geraten die Beamten der Küstenwache bei einer Routine-Einreisekontrolle an einen Waffenschmuggler. Armin Kruse, der Kapitän des Kutters, auf dem auch Zigaretten und Alkohol versteckt sind, kann jedoch auf dem polizeieigenen Kontrollboot entkommen und schießt dabei Marten Feddersen an. Fieberhaft rufen die Beamten eine Fahndung aus, um den flüchtigen Waffenhändler ausfindig zu machen – zunächst ohne Erfolg. Ehlers muss seinen Urlaub abbrechen, was wiederum zu Problemen mit Timo führt. Dem Kapitän fällt es schwer, sich auf die Arbeit zu konzentrieren. Die Erinnerung an Erik ist durch die Anwesenheit des Zwölfjährigen wieder lebendig geworden. Timo, der sich nicht mehr an seinen leiblichen Vater erinnern kann, ist total genervt von den ständigen Vergleichen, die sein Opa anstellt. Er verteidigt seinen Stiefvater als seinen „echten“ Vater, was wiederum Ehlers mehr trifft, als er sich eingestehen will. Glücklicherweise hilft Henrike Matani aus und versucht, zwischen den beiden zu vermitteln. Als die Beamten auf dem Kutter des Schmugglers mehrere tausend Euro sicherstellen, kommen sie Kruse langsam auf die Spur. Mittlerweile ist auch klar, dass der Waffenschmuggler einen Komplizen haben muss. Die Beamten staunen nicht schlecht, als sich herausstellt, dass offenbar Timos Stiefvater eine Verabredung mit Kruse hatte. Ist Wenkler etwa der Komplize? Als Timo nach einem Streit mit seinem Großvater wegläuft, um zu Roman zurückzugehen, steckt Ehlers endgültig in einer brisanten Zwickmühle.
