Ein Frachter der angesehenen Reederei Seydlitz wird von Jasper Michelsen durch die Kadetrinne gelotst. Derweil läuft eine junge Frau durch die Gänge des Schiffs. Meeresbiologin Lara Rothmann, deren Forschungen die Reederei mit einem Stipendium unterstützt, scheint etwas oder jemanden zu suchen. Plötzlich lässt ein Aufschrei die Besatzungsmitglieder zusammenzucken. Rothmann hat im Kabinengang eine Leiche entdeckt. Sie erkennt die Tote sofort: Es handelt sich um Susanne Seydlitz. Sanitäter Kai Norge vermutet, dass die Frau vergiftet wurde. Kapitän Ehlers und sein Team stehen vor einem heiklen Fall, denn um ein mögliches Motiv zu finden, müssen sie das unmittelbare Umfeld der Toten unter die Lupe nehmen und zugleich voreilige Verdächtigungen gegenüber der Presse vermeiden. An Bord des Frachters werden bei Lara Rothmann 30 000 Euro in bar entdeckt, mit denen sie in Russland angeblich Messgeräte für ihre Forschungsarbeit kaufen wollte. Bootsfrau Pia Cornelius ist skeptisch als Rothmann aussagt, sie habe nicht gewusst, dass Summen über 10 000 Euro deklariert werden müssen. Der Fall ruft Tanja Hansen vom Zoll auf den Plan, die überraschenderweise sofort einen Verdächtigen für den Mord präsentiert: Tilman Seydlitz, den Ehemann des Opfers. Hansen hat den ehemaligen Tauchlehrer, der erst durch die Heirat mit Susanne Seydlitz reich wurde, schon länger im Verdacht, regelmäßig Geld außer Landes zu schmuggeln. Muste seine Frau sterben, weil sie dahintergekommen war? Dann wäre die Stipendiatin nur ein unschuldiger Kurier gewesen. Der Firmenanwalt Dr. Vosskamp bestätigt, dass Herr und Frau Seydlitz in letzter Zeit oft gestritten haben. Aber was genau war der Anlass der Streitereien? Ging es tatsächlich um Schmuggel? Oder vielleicht doch um etwas ganz anderes? Das Team der Küstenwache ermittelt, dass Tilman Seydlitz schon seit längerem eine Affäre mit Lara Rothmann hat. Musste Susanne Seydlitz sterben, weil sie den beiden im Weg stand? In der Vernehmung behauptet Lara Rothmann, dass sich Herr und Frau Seydlitz sowieso scheiden lassen wollten.
