À Kattegat, de nombreux jarls et rois de la Norvège, du Danemark ainsi que de la Suède se rassemblent afin de former l'immense armée que les fils de Ragnar mèneront en Angleterre. Lors de ce rassemblement, le roi Harald retrouve une jeune femme qu'il convoitait, mais cette dernière est devenue femme de jarl sans l'attendre. En secret avec son frère, ils commencent à rechercher des alliés potentiels dans le but de se débarrasser un jour des Lothbrok.
De son côté, Ubbe se marie avec Margrethe en présence de ses frères, de Floki et de Helga. Cependant, lors de la nuit de noces, il consent à la « partager » avec Hvitserk lorsqu'il constate que son frère est également amoureux de la jeune femme. Cette dernière semble ravie et même comblée par la situation. Quant à Bjorn, il continue à coucher avec Astrid en secret, aux dépens de sa mère. Lors de la cérémonie sacrificielle et devant toute la ville de Kattegat réunie, Lagertha offre le jarl Jorgensen en sacrifice aux dieux, tandis que Bjorn et Astrid profitent de la cérémonie pour s'éclipser discrètement et coucher ensemble. Leur absence durant la cérémonie n'échappe cependant pas à Lagertha et Torvi. Peu avant leur départ vers l'Angleterre, Bjorn fait comprendre à ses frères qu'en tant qu’aîné, c'est lui qui dirigera leur armée au combat. Cette décision semble cependant contrarier Ivar. Après que Bjorn ait fait ses adieux à sa mère et à sa femme, l'armada des Vikings prend la mer.
En Angleterre, le roi Aelle est averti que les troupes vikings ont débarqué. Il en est de même pour le roi Ecbert, dans le Wessex. Sur le champ de bataille, l'armée de Northumbrie, d'abord trop confiante, se fait encercler par l'immense armée viking et est par la suite rapidement vaincue à la suite d'un immense et unique assaut meurtrier. Aelle, capturé, est ensuite traîné par les fils de Ragnar jusqu'à la tombe de leur père. En ouvrant la fosse aux serpents, tous constatent avec stupéfaction que la dépouille de Ragnar a disparu. À la suite de cela, Aelle est violemment torturé par les fils de Ragnar et par Floki, qui ne font preuve d'aucune pitié. Bjorn lui fait ensuite subir le châtiment ultime en lui dessinant un Aigle de sang dans le dos, sous les yeux fascinés et vengeurs de ses frères. Le cadavre d'Aelle est par la suite suspendu dans les airs, la peau du dos retirée pour former des ailes, semblables à celles d'un aigle, au dessus de la fosse où a péri le légendaire viking Ragnar Lothbrok.
