Bývalý voják Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston) pracuje jako noční recepční v káhirském hotelu Nefertiti, kde je ubytována krásná Sophie Alekan (Aure Atika), jež je milenkou bohatého Freddieho Hamida (David Avery). Jonathan neodolá půvabu Sophie a přijde na stopu ilegálního prodeje zbraní, který podle zjištěných indicií organizuje vlivný obchodník Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie). Aby překazil špinavý obchod se zbraněmi, neváhá Jonathan využít svých kontaktů v Káhiře, současně ale musí rychle dostat do bezpečí Sophii. V Londýně se mezitím získané materiály dostávají do rukou agentky britské tajné služby Angely Burr (Olivia Colman), která již léta usiluje o dopadení Ropera.
