George Mottershead není příliš úspěšný muž. Bydlí v bytě nad obchodem svého otce Alberta s manželkou Lizzií a dvěma dcerami – dospívající Muriel a malou June. Po bojích první světové války, ve kterých zahynul jeho bratr, trpí George posttraumatickou stresovou poruchou. Válečná zkušenost ho naučila soucítit s každým živým tvorem a jeho rodina jen bezmocně přihlíží, když se do malého domku nastěhují papoušek, opice a později dokonce velbloud, které George zachránil před smrtí hladem či surovým zacházením cirkusáků. Cestou na sraz válečných veteránů narazí George náhodou na nádherné, leč zpustlé venkovské sídlo – Oakfield House. Dům a rozsáhlé pozemky by byly pro rodinu a rozrůstající se zvířenu ideální. Jak to však zaonačit, když Mottersheadovi nemají ani libru?
