Snem mladého Gona Freakse, vychovávaného doposud tetou Mito, je stát se po vzoru svého otce Ginga tzv. hunterem, což je v tamním světě někdo, komu není dobrodružství a odvaha cizí. Hledá například vzácné tvory a poklady nebo chytá nebezpečné zločince. Přestože Gon svého otce nikdy předtím neviděl a zná jej pouze z vyprávění své tety, je plně odhodlán stát se hunterem, aby se mohl s otcem setkat a pokračovat v jeho stopách. Musí však podstoupit náročnou hunterskou zkoušku, která vyzkouší nejen jeho schopnosti fyzické, ale i psychické. Potkává při ní nové přátele, jakými jsou třeba chamtivý a zbrklý, avšak loajální a vtipný Leorio, tichý a přemýšlivý mstitel Kurapika nebo tajemný zabiják Killua se svým skateboardem, ale také nepřátele, jako třeba zvráceného kouzelníka Hisoku nebo gang s názvem Spiders, který vyvraždil Kurapikův klan Kurta. Jedná se o remake stejnojmenného seriálu z roku 1999, jehož se tentokrát ujalo animátorské studio Madhouse. Protože původní seriál končí otevřeně a manga, podle níž je seriál natočen, byla i po ukončení seriálu nadále vydávána, rozhodlo se studio Madhouse po jedenácti letech vytvořit remake, jenž bude obsahovat i příběh odehrávající se po událostech popsaných v původním seriálu.
