Bratři Elricové, Edward a Alphonse, kterým právě zemřel jediný rodič, maminka. Alchymie je mocná věda a Ed s Alem se rozhodnou s její pomocí maminku oživit. Lidská transmutace je však největší tabu v alchymii. A bratry porušení tohoto tabu stojí vysokou cenu. Al ztrácí tělo, jeho duše přichycena ke starému brnění, Ed ruku a nohu, které nahrazují kovové protézy. A maminka neožívá. Bratři přísahají, že získají svá těla zpět. Věří, že jim k tomu pomůže legendární kámen mudrců. Ale kde ho hledat? Nejlepší informace má vojsko a tak Ed vstupuje do nenáviděné armády. Ještě bude možná třeba překročit mnohá další tabu, alchymistická i morální. A bratři nejsou jediní, kdo po kameni mudrců touží.
Fullmetal Alchemist, krátce Hagaren, je zástupce žánru shounen. Na rozdíl od velké části zástupců tohoto žánru se však děj neutápí v soubojích a testech, které zabírají několik po sobě jdoucích dílů. Má naopak velmi hutný příběh, jen málokterý díl nepousouvá kupředu děj hlavní zápletky. Postavy jsou povětšinou morálně nejednoznačné, v průběhu děje jsou jejich činy stále pochopitelnější. I sami bratři občas váhají mezi menším a větším zlem. I přes mnohdy jásavou barevnost v kresbě nelze seriál doporučit slabším povahám, neboť události, ke kterým dochází, jsou často velice neveselé a seriál je plný krutosti.
