这是NHK的第35部大河剧。本剧以堺屋太一的‘秀吉’、‘丰臣秀长’与‘人与鬼 信长与光秀’三部作品为蓝本，前三十话着重刻画秀吉从贫民，凭借过人的智慧和永不放弃的斗志，得到时称“尾张大傻瓜”的织田信长赏识，并在信长的天下布武之道上出人头地的故事。第三十话被誉为最为经典一集，渡哲也饰演的信长在本能寺的火光中自刎而死，武者情怀笔者亦颇感动。后十九话描绘了秀吉击败光秀，胜家，降服德川，终而成为日本第一人的故事。 然而本剧对秀吉的美化极为明显,秀次一家惨杀及晚年出兵朝鲜失利的阴暗面皆未描写,出兵朝鲜则全推给石田三成的阴谋和馋言,石田三成变成一切恶事的元凶。NHK表示系顾虑到中国大陆和韩国民众的感受而作此修改。剧中人物刻画极为成功，主要演员如渡哲也，竹中直人表演有可圈点处，战争刻画精彩，情节紧凑，只是不熟悉日本文化的话或许难有强烈共鸣。
