1985年发生一件震惊世界的“苏联战俘暴动”事件。当时，有12名苏联俘虏被送到巴基斯坦西北边境省的伯德埃波集中营关押，那里是美国中央情报局和巴基斯坦三军情报局武装阿富汗抵抗运动的大本营。在营地里，战俘们受到非人待遇，被逼上绝路的他们在4月26日傍晚趁营地看守做祷告之机，迅速夺取武器库和电台。战俘们试图用电台联系驻阿富汗的苏联第34航空军，希望他们能提供空中救援，可是军队没有任何反应。最后时刻，阿富汗抵抗运动领袖拉巴尼在美、巴顾问的陪同下到现场劝降。战俘们提出的条件是：“我们要和苏联驻巴基斯坦大使见面。”可是苏联大使因种种原因不肯露面。4月27日，不耐烦的拉巴尼命令进攻，苏联战俘们拼死抵抗，最终引爆武器库自尽，惊天动地的爆炸把现场炸出直径达80米的弹坑。
