本故事发生於五、六十年代的香港。邓伟祥（郭晋安饰）奉母遗愿，从内地到港投靠未来岳父凌醒波（秦煌饰）。谁知找球不果，惟先找到表叔邓镜尘（马国明饰）投靠。灰尘是个通天经纪人，终日营营役役，朝不保夕。机缘巧合下，尘从一寻人广告中，得知祥未来岳父竟是富商波。灰尘不惜借下放高利贷者雷高利贷，教祥讹称有钱人，一起往见未来岳父。不料，被球妻-林兰卿（卢宛茵饰）认定祥存心胡来，把祥、尘赶走，祥误会被卿嫌弃家贫，自尊心受损，忿然离去。雷上门追债，祥以事情因自己而起，决为尘还债，尘感动，所以两表亲和混同煲，一起觅食。祥的同屋住郑碧云（胡杏儿饰）与弟郑小龙（林泳东饰）相依为命。云原於波之花露水厂打工，因厂长公报私仇，借词辞退云，云逼於无奈，只好暂时到跳蚤市场卖粉果。另一方面，祥未婚妻凌凤（江芷妮饰）因不愿婚姻大事被父母安排，离家出走。奶妈黎雯娣（夏萍饰）安排凤暂住板间房，与祥等成为同屋住。凤对祥产生好感。而灰尘也被凤之青春美丽吸引。祥把信物交尘拿去典当应急还债，巧遇球，球认出信物，误把尘认作未来女婿。卿义子谢君绵（黎耀祥饰）献计找其蔺表妹参狄丽娜（黄赟潼饰）扮作凤，以应付及试探尘，尘被娜美色吸引……
