牛大爷和牛小伟相继得了痔疮，都埋怨是每天坐客厅里的沙发坐出来的。牛大妈为了给家人一个惊喜，趁老伴和儿女们都不在家的时候，买回来一套样式时髦的木制板条式长靠椅，将原来的那一套旧沙发低价卖给了邻居酒鬼（酒鬼新交了一农村来城里当保姆的中年妇女做女朋友，想把自己破乱的家重新布置一下。） 牛大爷参加了一整天厂里的活动，回家发现使用了多年的旧沙发不见了，换成了高雅气派的新靠椅，不但不高兴，反而神色不安，焦急地打听旧沙发的去向。 牛大爷得知旧沙发卖给了邻居酒鬼，一反常态地买了酒菜登门与酒鬼对饮，趁酒鬼醉后，急切地翻找旧沙发里藏的东西。酒鬼的女朋友来访，牛大爷只得半途而废，空手而归。 牛大妈发觉牛大爷的态度反常，怀疑旧沙发里藏着牛大爷的什么隐私，也假装帮邻居酒鬼的女朋友做缝纫活儿，伺机探究旧沙发里的秘密。但也没有机会下手。 朱婷婷听酒鬼的女朋友说，牛大爷和牛大妈都对那个旧沙发表现出特殊感情。朱 婷婷怀疑那里面藏有什么钱物或财宝，鼓动牛小伟一探究竟。牛小伟故伎重演，伙同两个哥们儿化装成公安人员，趁酒鬼醉酒、他的女朋友不懂法、好欺骗之虚，敲开酒鬼家的门，说是接到举报搜查毒品，从沙发中翻出写着牛永贵名字的存折一张，原来牛大爷将4800元私房钱藏在旧沙发里好几年了。但此时恰巧牛大爷和牛大妈来访，识破牛小伟一伙儿的真面目，原来牛大爷已和牛大妈交待了藏私房钱的事儿，老两口儿决定共同出面和邻居酒鬼说明真相，讨回那张存折。 本集附线：牛小伟不满朱婷婷财经上的严格盘查，通过虚报饭店采购成本，向朱婷婷隐瞒杀猪菜馆儿的实际收入，想存留一部分私房钱供自己灵活使用，不料被朱婷婷巧妙侦破。但朱婷婷由此意识到自己把关过严的弊病，放宽了对牛小伟财经上的控制。
