慈禧的心情，跟随慈禧几十年的总管太监李莲英最明白，他认为撤帘归政虽是躲不了，但总有办法暗中延续慈禧的影响力。慈禧经过长考，终不放心让光绪完全亲政。荣禄以乾隆朝历史提醒慈禧。乾隆在八十多岁时禅位给儿子嘉庆，但仍以“训政”之名，掌握着实权，直到他去世。在慈禧的布置与设计之下，情势朝着她希望的目的发展，最后由光绪生父醇亲王带头主动提出，让慈禧归政后继续“训政”。慈禧假装勉为其难地接受了。光绪没想到会是这结果，彷徨无助。却又在慈禧的温情攻势下，接受了这个事实。文秀和顺桂都中了进士，看榜时，他们认识了日本记者冈圭之介。因为冈，文秀认识了一位奇女子。张夫人是一位漂亮的中国少妇，使馆区酒吧的主人，自称“张夫人”的她，交游甚广，神通广大的意思，谁也不知道她的来历。文秀为了春儿的将来，求教于张夫人，并说出了他们的身世。原来，文秀中举人的那一天，才得知他的亲生母亲，是早被赶出家门的一个丫环。当文秀好不容易找到母亲，母亲却已经病入膏肓了。春儿和玲儿兄妹俩，是他母亲收养的孤儿。没想到，春儿为了得到官府的赏银救娘性命，竟然已经自己动手净了身。救了春儿的是村中的白奶奶，白奶奶为安慰春儿，说他是昴宿坐命，将来能飞黄腾达，连老佛爷的财宝都归他管。春儿在白奶奶的鼓励之下，挣扎着活了下来。文秀对春儿不禁感佩又感动。在文秀为母亲守孝的三年里，他和春儿玲儿真正成了相依为命的亲人。张夫人答应为春儿找个师傅，让他教给春儿宫中当差的规矩和诀窍。张夫人所说的师傅，是一个落魄的老太监老德子。
