卡蜜儿·普里克，圣路易斯一间新闻报社的记者，幼年有着非比常人的经历，如今嗜酒成瘾。她在报社的顶头上司法兰克·柯瑞要求下，不情愿地回到自己的家乡风谷小镇，对小镇上最近失踪的少女娜塔莉·基恩以及另一位受害者少女的安·奈许谋杀案进行新闻报道。回到自己熟悉的生活环境中，她的童年记忆渐渐在脑海中浮现出来。卡蜜儿来到当地警局，受到了警长比尔·维克里并不热情的礼遇。警长不愿意把小镇上发生的恶性事件传扬甚广。卡蜜儿在寻找失踪女孩娜塔莉·基恩的搜索队中遇到了老熟人洁姬·欧尼尔、牧师以及警探理查·威利斯，他因未成年少女安·奈许被害案件而被调来风谷小镇参与侦查工作，但是直到第二名少女娜塔莉·基恩失踪时仍未发现关键线索。最后卡蜜儿来到自幼关系不好的母亲阿朵拉·克雷林家，见到继父艾伦·克雷林。卡蜜儿住在了幼年居住的房间，幼年与早逝的亲妹妹玛莉安一起的记忆涌上心来。她惊慌地逃离房间来到了附近的酒吧，遇到了警探理查并与之交谈少女被害案件。转天之后，卡蜜儿采访了第一位受害者安的父亲鲍勃·纳什。鲍勃讲述了女儿失踪时的一些细节以及遗体被发现的情况，表现出痛失女儿的悲伤情绪。但是他脾气暴躁，对女儿们的教育方式强硬，并且夫妻关系不好。母亲阿朵拉与卡蜜儿理念不合，不希望女儿过多地关心此类事件。但是卡蜜儿没有停下工作，在她找到并希望采访第二位失踪少女娜塔莉的哥哥约翰·基恩之际，他们在一条小巷内发现了娜塔莉遇害的遗体。在警局做完笔录回到家的卡蜜儿，发现自己同母异父的妹妹艾玛正是发现娜塔莉遗体之时，在自己身边并与其交流过的轮滑少女之一。但是她在家的表现和外边迥然不同，
