昭和二十五年五月——樱花飘飞的季节。作家高田接到了编辑部的一个电话，希望他改写一个收录到罗马文献中的希腊时代的故事。 故事讲述的是企图起义杀死国王的梅乐斯被判死刑，但梅乐斯希望能回乡参加妹妹的婚礼，让最好的朋友石匠替他坐三天牢。如果梅乐斯失信三天后没有回来，石匠就会被代替处死。国王原本不信任人心，但他想既然梅乐斯永远不会回来了，三天后就能处死石匠昭告天下人人心丑恶。梅乐斯为了不失信于石匠，全力奔跑回乡参加婚礼又跑回皇宫，虽其间有着对人间和妹妹的留恋，也有回王宫路上的种种困难，但仍在第三天太阳下上之前赶到。 高田在写剧本的同时，想起了一件往事。十五年前，他在故乡也有一位挚友城岛但这个家伙却没有信守两人的约定，到今天高田依然对那天的事耿耿于怀。因为亲身经历过这样的背叛的自己写不出用生命信守承诺的故事。正在高田陷入了极大的困惑中时邮差突然送来了一封信，信中说：城岛已经时日无多他希望可以见朋友最后一面。高田匆匆的赶回家乡，见到了病床上的城岛也明白了当年分别背后的原因…… 虽说是老梗，但是在描述方式上确也很特别，从过去，戏剧，三个平行的平面，过去道来前因后果，渲染主人公的内心的痛苦纠结，戏剧则用来夸张化的影射现实。每个平面之间又相互联系交融，体会着主人公的思想，戏剧的意义。 是背叛者更痛苦 还是被背叛者更痛苦？ 是等待者更痛苦 还是被等待者更痛苦？ 也许已经没有再等待的必要那才是最痛苦的事
