来自BBC自然历史部门的团队为拍摄《火山的遗失之地》系列纪录片，展开了在巴布亚新几内亚的一片鲜为人知的热带雨林里的旅行考察活动。 在巴布亚新几内亚偏远的博萨维山区(MountBosavi)，科学家们发现了自20万年前火山爆发后，一片与世隔绝的生物栖息地。在这片神秘的栖息地上，科学家们找到了一种哺乳动物的新品种：博萨维毛鼠(BosaviWoollyRat)。作为目前世界上体型最大的老鼠之一，它的外貌与普通老鼠差别不大，从头到尾长约87厘米，重逾1.3公斤。这种老鼠有着银灰色的厚皮毛和尖利的牙齿，基本吃素，可在树洞或地底建立巢穴。并且，这种老鼠是“友好”物种，十分“令人难以置信的”温驯。科学家发现它时，它正在啃食一片叶子。科学家感叹地表示：“它从没看到过人类。博萨维火山口真是与世隔绝。” 在考察过程中，英国的科学家们还发现了其他约40种新的物种。其中包括会伪装的壁虎、毛刺细密的毛毛虫、长着毒牙的青蛙和能从鱼鳔里发出声音的鱼、奇异的蝙蝠、蜘蛛等。
