南朝鲜军的营参谋李大敏遭到了联合国军31团连长汤姆的歧视，叛逃到了志愿军45师。从李大敏口中得知，联合国军将在上甘岭方向开始一个大的行动。但这恰是范弗里特希望秦基伟获得的情报，因为他用的就是声东击西的计策，让志愿军感受到上甘岭地区的巨大压力，从而将西方山方向的44师调动过来。这样他就能趁机突破适合机械化作战的西方山，从而进军平康谷地，将志愿军逼退200公里。10月14日凌晨，联合国军进攻上甘岭，以大量炮火饱和轰炸597.9高地和537.7高地北山。秦基伟在军部指挥所沉着指挥应战，但因为所有通信断绝，军部对上甘岭的真实情况一无所知，只得让段显峰与45师侦察科长亲自上山去看看，将最真实的情况带回来。第一天的战况之惨烈超过了所有人的想象，刘向阳哭着将自己在山上看到的情况告诉秦基伟，秦基伟更坚定了要守住阵地，与美军硬碰硬的决心。经过数天争夺，上甘岭上的地表阵地还是全部丢失，部队退守坑道。就在大家都在急于反击夺回阵地的时候，秦基伟全面考虑，决定将反击从18号推迟到19号，以做更充分准备，并争取彻底将敌人赶下去。
