1952年10月8日，板门店的谈判在联合国军的胡搅蛮缠下彻底破裂。段显峰遇到了一个幸福的烦恼——因为他优秀的表现，中国人民志愿军第三兵团兵团部准备调他去当参谋，但是他一直有个执念，想到最一线去战斗。但作为军人，以服从命令为天职，真的调令来了，他也只能去兵团。所以在兵团下发调令之前，他找到军长秦基伟表达了自己想留在15军，去火线历练的想法。秦基伟想到在南京军事学院，自己第一次见到段显峰，就被当时还是助教的他在课堂上讲诺曼底登陆的才华所吸引。后来自己收到赴朝作战的命令时，段显峰主动找到自己请求加入15军，秦基伟被他以死报国的决心所打动，才将他带来朝鲜。此时兵团想调走他，秦基伟也是舍不得的。于是让他写请战书，先将他派到警卫连，以此暂时将他留在15军。谈判的破裂让秦基伟攻击391高地的计划得以实施。在攻击391高地的潜伏时，邱少云身上伪装被敌人炮火点燃，但他为了不暴露战友，为了战斗的胜利，至死也没有动一下，从而壮烈牺牲。15军的持续小兵群出击打得联合国军焦头烂额，范弗里特筹划的“摊牌行动”终于也获得了联军司令克拉克的同意。一场恶战开始酝酿，双方主将开始斗智斗勇。
