1951年中国人民志愿军第十五军跨过鸭绿江，参加抗美援朝第五次战役。十五军大部队在敌人的轰炸中行军前往集合地点，参谋段显峰向秦基伟建议转进芝浦里打阻击战，而秦基伟早有此意。此时参谋长张蕴钰拿着电报走过来，表示上级命令部队在芝浦里地区的朴达峰等地阻击美军。十五军的战士们接到战斗命令后斗志昂扬，冯百胜、胡满仓等连队干部纷纷激励战友。在朴达峰上，老八连遭遇了巨大的压力，军部派出冯百胜的三连增援朴达峰，并让段显峰作为冯百胜的副手参战。段显峰提出兵分两路，一路增援朴达峰，一路先行在朴达峰侧翼的215等高地进行阻击，拦截美25师的进攻道路，从而减轻朴达峰的压力。经过艰苦卓绝地努力，十五军成功将敌人的追击逼停，为志愿军的整体回撤休整做出了巨大的贡献。“联合国军”开始与我方谈判，但在谈判桌上，对方毫无诚意，不断提出无理要求。我方谈判人员与对方斗智斗勇。彭总让秦基伟带领十五军去五圣山、西方山、斗流峰一带与二十六军换防，秦基伟率部到达五圣山地区，第一时间登上五圣山视察前线，了解敌情。在五圣山对面的鸡雄山上，联合国军第八集团军司令范弗里特也在视察前线，两人遥望，一场即将载入史册的对决逐渐展开。
