生长于都市的半田清舟，其父是著名书道家半田清明，他自己也以新锐书道家闻名。但是，在他获颁某个奖项的祝贺仪式上，美术馆的馆长、书道界的权威八神龙之介批评他的字很无趣。这让清舟很震惊。他不顾经纪人川藤鹰生的劝阻，和馆长发生冲突。清明警告儿子：“在你成为书道家之前，作为一个‘人’还有不足之处。”并命令他移居长崎县五岛列岛冷静冷静。清舟降落在五岛福江机场，这种既没有公交车也没有出租车的乡下，令他不禁愕然。尽管如此，他还是乘坐初次见面的岛民琴石耕作驾驶的拖拉机，一路坎坷来到目的地七岳乡。乡长木望裕次郎带领他来到一座古旧的独栋住宅。然而，本应没有人住的屋子里却有人类的气息。原来是住在附近的小学生琴石奈瑠。奈瑠和村里的小捣蛋鬼们把这里当成了基地。为了修行书道，清舟想一个人静静地独处。但是，以奈瑠为首的岛民们生性自由奔放，随随便便就上别人家串门，与他们打交道让本就不习惯乡村独居生活的清舟焦头烂额。不过，清舟虽然为这种日常生活困惑，他的心灵却也在岛民的帮助和激励下，一点点成长着，并且开拓出书法的新境界。
