日军入侵中国后，民不聊生，乡下青年陈真带着妹妹小燕一起来到了繁华的上海讨生活。来到上海后，陈真当了一名黄包车夫，而小燕则进入了一间医院当护士。陈真每天都会拉和小燕在同一间医院当护士的日本姑娘武田由美上下班，两人渐渐坠入了爱河。陈真爱好武术，闲时经常自己照着书上的招式练习，一次偶然机会他的身手被青帮老大蔡六斤发现，于是被招进了青帮当打手。陈真很快成为了青帮第一打手，而妹妹小燕则一直十分担心哥哥，她始终认为哥哥混黑道不会有好下场的。随后小燕不幸遭到了马贼杀害，悲痛万分的陈真终于醒悟，从此金盆洗手退出了青帮。当时抗日组织精武门的掌门霍元甲发现陈真是一块练武的材料，于是加以指点，得到指点后的陈真武功进步神速，并最终为小燕报了仇。陈真感恩于霍元甲，加入了精武门。这时由美的日本未婚夫来到了上海，当他得知由美和陈真之间的事情后，决心向陈真挑战，胜者就可以抱得美人归。陈真虽然不愿意，但最终接受了挑战。
