午夜，一架从洛杉矶飞往波士顿的767客机突遭客舱失压泄气的危机。从沉睡中惊醒的布莱恩·恩格尔（大卫·摩斯 David Morse 饰）惊恐地发现，飞机上所有的乘客和机组人员都消失了，身边只剩下十个同样身处险境的男女老幼，手足无措。那些消失无踪的乘客所留下来的“遗物”，仍原封不动的停留在原处，好像不曾发生过任何事情，然而噩梦才刚刚开始。在三万七千英尺的高空之上，这些幸存的“生还者”将最后一丝希望付诸于地面，却完全联系不上，彻底失联。当他们将飞机着陆之后，一片死寂的地面更让他们惶恐不安。陆地上的城市似乎毫无变化，只是荒无人烟的景象，被深深的黑暗所笼罩，仿佛这些城市从来不曾存在过一样。在这片无人之境，空气是凝固的，声音是失真的，连食物也是索然无味的。每一个人都深陷在不祥的预感之中，不知所措，宛若砧板上的鱼肉任由宰割。正在这时，一个恐怖的声音正在向他们一步步地逼近，似乎要吞噬掉这群被时间遗忘的人。
