这是NHK的第17部大河剧。该剧描写了高举打倒平家的旗帜，集结在源氏嫡系源赖朝麾下的关东武士的光荣和悲剧。赖朝的妻子北条政子由首次出演大河剧的岩下志麻出演，讲述了从源平之争乱到镰仓幕府的创建，最后演变成源氏衰亡的爱憎历史剧。顺带一提，这是大河剧中首次尝试以女性为主人公，与此同时，家庭关系的描写等也加入了家庭剧的要素。此后，以《女太阁记》和《春日局》为代表的桥田寿贺子电视剧也相继登场。另外，本作品还致力于一之谷和坛之浦等经常在野外进行外景拍摄的合战的豪华场面，另一方面将剧中的对话全部用现代语调进行统一。对于这一点，观众们褒贬不一。
