1898年，晚清中国，戊戌变法失败“六君子”被捕。霍元甲得到消息后如晴天霹雳。深受“六君子”爱国热忱感染的霍元甲，欲拼尽全力和江湖传奇“大刀王五”一起营救谭嗣同，却不想遭到谭嗣同拒绝。与谭嗣同在狱中的最后一别，让霍元甲深受谭嗣同大同思想的影响，开始萌生家国情怀，想要投身到历史洪流之中。理解了谭嗣同欲以鲜血警醒世人的凛然，霍元甲虽心痛不已，却也只能眼睁睁看着英雄殉国，并因谭嗣同之死而被义兄大刀王五误会，遭遇割袍断义。随后不久，大刀王五被奸人所害身首异处。霍元甲得知消息连夜去为义兄收尸，虽然让王五留存全尸，却给霍家引来大祸，致使霍氏男丁尽死。一年后，隐居沧州的霍元甲出山走镖，却不想又陷入仇家圈套之中，费尽千辛万苦，虽然洗脱干系，却让他心灰意冷，他由此决定南下上海。霍元甲的精武门很快就在上海立住了脚跟，霍元甲的名气也越来越大。这让已经将侵华列为国策的日本人十分不满，面对日本人的挑衅，霍元甲带病上阵，在与日本人的最后较量中斗智斗勇，最终凭借过人的胆识挫败了日本人的阴谋。
