レーサーとしての仕事を探すために帰国した神崎次郎（木村拓哉）。以前世話になったレースチームの一之瀬新作（泉谷しげる）にも相手にされなかった。次郎は、仕方なく実家の養護施設『風の丘ホーム』で子供たちの通学用送迎バスの運転手として働かされることになる。　次郎は早朝から、姉のちひろ（松下由樹）に叩き起こされる。眠い目をこすりながら表に出ると、すでに水越朋美（小雪）と鳥居元一郎（堺雅人）が子供たちを送り出していた。子供たちの服装などを細かくチェックする朋美は鳥居から、あまりうるさく言うなと注意されている。それでも、朋美がチェックを怠らずにいるところに、次郎が来た。そんな次郎の横を、星野美冴（上野樹里）が二宮ユキエ（夏帆）を連れて走り抜ける。「なんちゃってレーサー」と通りすがりに美冴に言われた次郎は、頭に来るのだが…。美冴とユキエはバスに乗らずに歩いて行ってしまう。そんな2人をバスで追いかけた次郎は、美冴に自分が本物のレーサーだとムキになって告げた。子供たちが行ってしまうと、朋美は職員室で美冴を独り部屋にしたらどうかと猛（原田芳雄）らに提案。ホームの職員には就職をほのめかした美冴だが、朋美は彼女の部屋に大学の入試パンフレットを見つけたのだ。受験のために勉強の出来る環境を望む朋美だが、鳥居は反対。2人部屋が義務付けられているホームでの特別扱いは良くないと言うのだ。猛が美冴に直接話を聞こうと言うと、朋美は自分に任せて欲しいと告げる。子供たちを駅まで送った次郎は、チーム・イチノセが行うプレス発表会の会場へ。末永たまき（岡本綾）に一之瀬との面会を頼む次郎だが断られてしまう。彼にはスポンサーが確実に付いていると答える。次郎には、自分にもまだ宣伝価値があると考えていた…。ホームでは、朋美が美冴の机を移動し始めた。美冴は部屋替えの必要なんか無く、ユキエの迷惑も考えて欲しいと訴える。塩谷大輔（石田法嗣）は自分も独り部屋にして欲しいと言い出し、ホームに波風が立ち始めた。そんなところに事情を知らない次郎が帰ってきた。次郎は、朋美が廊下まで移動した美冴の机を「邪魔だ」と元に戻してしまう。その翌日、次郎は以前自分のスポンサーを務めてくれた企業を訪ねる。一方、ホームでは美冴のために朋美が大学の資料をまとめている。初めて子供たちへの手応えを感じたと話す朋美に、鳥居はそう簡単ではないと言う。
