某ヨーロッパサーキットのモーターホーム。鏡の前に1人の男が立つ。しなやかに鍛えられた肉体を持つ男の名は、神崎次郎（木村拓哉）。レーシングスーツを着込んだ次郎は、マシンに乗り込みコースに飛び出して行く。コース上に出た次郎は、後ろから接近するマシンに煽られる。そのマシンには、チームのファーストドライバーが乗っていた。つまり、次郎はセカンドドライバー。当然、行われているタイムアタックでは、ファーストドライバーを優先しなくてはいけない。だが、次郎は本番のレースのごとく食い下がり、抜きつ抜かれつの競争状態になってしまう。2台はコーナーで互いのラインを失ってスピン。怒ったファーストドライバーと次郎は、殴り合いになってしまった。そして、やって来た監督から、次郎はチーム解雇を宣告されてしまう。次郎は、新たな職場探しにF1のレース会場へ行くのだが…。それから1か月後。『風の丘ホーム』に、草間周平（中島裕翔）という男の子が連れて来られた。周平を出迎えたのは、ホームの保育士、水越朋美（小雪）。朋美は、周平と彼を連れてきた森原夫婦を職員室に案内する。職員室ではホームの経営者、神崎猛（原田芳雄）と保育士、鳥居元一郎（堺雅人）が周平の到着を温かくねぎらう。森原夫婦が、ここに来た詳細を話そうとすると、周平は席を外すと言う。朋美は、そんな周平に施設を案内。森原夫婦は、里親として周平を預かったが、なついてくれないので施設に返す事にしたと猛たちに語る。そんな夫婦に、子供をペット扱いしていると猛は言い始める。傍らで、やり取りを見ていた猛の娘、ちひろ（松下由樹）が落ち着かせようとした。しかし、周平に責任転嫁を始めた夫婦に、ついに猛の怒りが爆発…しそうになった時、朋美が入ってきた。周平が行方不明になってしまったのだ。周平は、駅まで逃げてきた。だが、ポケットには数百円程度の小銭だけ。どうにかしようと考えた周平は、ある男に目を留める。スーツケースを引いて改札口を出てきたのは次郎だった。周平は次郎に金を貸して欲しいと頼む。だが、入院した母を見舞いに行きたいと言う周平のウソは、次郎には即座に見抜かれてしまう。次郎を中心に今、次々と事態が展開し始めるのだった…。
