学校教育が太陽だとしたら、塾はその光を十分吸収できない子供たちを照らす月・・・。昭和から平成に至る日本社会の変遷を背景に、天才的講師とカリスマ的経営者の出会いが生んだある塾と家族の半世紀を描く。小学校の用務員でありながらいつしか落ちこぼれの子どもたちに勉強を教えるようになった天才的教師の大島吾郎。戦中の国民学校の教育に反発し、自由で豊かな教育の可能性を塾に見出したシングルマザーの赤坂千明。それぞれに個性の異なるふたりが公私ともにタッグを組んだことで、塾業界に新たな歴史が生み出されていく。その歴史はまた、時代とは切っても切り離せない男と女、そして親と子の葛藤の歴史でもあった――。日本人は戦後、何を得て、そして何を失ってきたのか。「塾」という世代を超えた共通項をキーワードに描く、独りで見て心動かされ、家族揃って見て楽しめる物語です。
