Jane Travers entdeckt unter den jungen Straftätern ein Schreibtalent und diskutiert mit ihrem ehemaligen Chef darüber, den Roman des 17-jährigen Alan Stewart zu verlegen. Es wäre ihr erstes Projekt als Verlagslektorin in London. Dort sitzt Williams Studienfreund und Angestellter der Ölhandelsgesellschaft „Qestrel“, Martin Newall, wegen Mordes in Untersuchungshaft. Bei ihrem ersten Gespräch erzählt Newall Traves seine Geschichte: Wie er von seiner jungen Sekretärin Lucy verführt wurde, mit ihr eine Affäre begann und wie er sie eines Abends tot in ihrem gemeinsamen Hotelzimmer auffand. Newells Frau glaubt an seine Unschuld, denn sein Laptop wurde aus dem Hotelzimmer entwendet. Dies könnte ein Motiv darstellen. So glaubt Travers seinem Freund schlussendlich und übernimmt dessen Verteidigung im Prozess – unter der Bedingung, sich jederzeit daraus zurückziehen zu dürfen, falls Zweifel an der Unschuld seines Mandanten aufkommen sollten. Als William Travers an den Gerichtshof und damit an seine alte Arbeitsstelle zurückkehrt, wird er von traumatischen Erinnerungen gequält. Was ist damals geschehen? Detective Inspector Wenborn findet inzwischen heraus, dass der Tote unter einem falschen Namen gelebt hat. In Wirklichkeit hieß er Philip Spaull, war Tierschutzaktivist und der Polizei durch diverse Vergehen bekannt. Wenborn vermutet, dass der Schuss durch Spaulls Stirn kein Mord, sondern eine Hinrichtung war.
