Ein neuer Fall führt Charlotte Lindholm in menschliche Abgründe und sie selbst an den Rand der Belastbarkeit. In der Nähe von Walsrode wurde eine Bankiersfrau entführt. In heller Panik bittet Frank Holdt, ihr Ehemann und Leiter einer örtlichen Bank, seine wohlhabenden Schwiegereltern, Christian und Gudrun Rebenow, um Hilfe bei der Lösegeldforderung. Er kann die geforderte Summe bis zum gesetzten Termin nicht allein aufbringen.Gegen Holdts ausdrücklichen Willen informiert Rebenow die Polizei; daraufhin überbringt Holdt auf Anweisung der Entführer im Alleingang das Geld. Fieberhaft laufen die Ermittlungen an. Als Julia Holdts Wagen leer im Wald gefunden wird, ist das Schlimmste zu befürchten. Nach kurzer Zeit gerät Holdt selbst ins Visier der Ermittlungen. Charlotte Lindholm findet heraus, dass er hoch verschuldet ist, seine Ehe am Ende und Julia Holdt einen Liebhaber hatte. Als Beweise für häusliche Gewalt hinzukommen, verstrickt Holdt sich immer stärker in widersprüchliche Aussagen.
